Why You're Not Getting Interviews: The Resume and LinkedIn Mistake Most Professionals Make

I know why you’re not getting interviews. Do you? It’s the same resume and LinkedIn mistake most professionals make, and you probably aren’t even aware you are doing it.

As a career coach, I hear this all the time:

"I've applied for dozens of jobs, updated my resume, polished my LinkedIn profile...so why am I still not getting interviews?"

If you've asked yourself that question, you're not alone. Many professionals assume the problem is a lack of experience. In reality, the issue is often the exact opposite.

You are trying to showcase too much.

It’s like throwing a pot of spaghetti against the wall and seeing what sticks.

Why You're Not Getting Interviews: The Resume and LinkedIn Mistake Most Professionals Make

Your Resume Is Not Your Life Story

One of the biggest mistakes I see is professionals listing every skill, every certification, every career change, and every job title they've ever held. Because they believe that more experience equals more opportunities.

Unfortunately, that's not how recruiters think.

Your resume isn't an autobiography. It's a marketing document. The purpose of your resume isn't to tell your entire story—it's to convince someone to invite YOU to an interview. To distinguish you amongst the competition.

The last thing you want to do is confuse the hiring manager who couldn’t care less if you run marathons. It’s a personal asset – not a job skill.

Think of Your LinkedIn Profile as a Billboard

Your LinkedIn banner is the eye-catcher of your profile. It is the billboard that attracts hiring managers and recruiters. We hope people stop to read it.

Mine explicitly states, “No soliciting.” Unfortunately, the statement does not prevent all the cyber beggars from pitching their nonsense. But my headline does capture their attention in their search for coaches to petition.

So, imagine driving down the highway and seeing a billboard that advertises:

  • Attorney

  • Project Manager

  • Digital Marketer

  • Coach

  • Business Owner

  • Sales Professional

  • Consultant

What would you think?

Probably the same thing recruiters think. "What exactly does this person do?"

Your LinkedIn profile should answer one question immediately: What do you want someone to hire you to do?

If recruiters must guess, they'll move on to the next candidate. And you’ll be wondering why you're not getting interviews.

Stop Throwing Spaghetti at Your Career

We've all heard the expression:

"Throw spaghetti against the wall and see if it sticks."

That might work in the kitchen. But I promise it won’t work in your career.

Trying to market yourself for six different career paths at once creates confusion instead of opportunity.

Clarity wins because hiring managers and recruiters are looking for very specific keywords to solve their specific dilemma: Hiring the best person for the role.

What Recruiters Are Really Looking For

Recruiters and hiring managers aren't looking for someone who has done everything. They're looking for someone who can solve a specific problem.

When your resume clearly communicates your experience, your accomplishments, and your direction, you're much more likely to make it through both Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and human recruiters.

The ATS scans your resume for specific keywords that match the job description. It is then handed off to the hiring manager, who will review all your amazing assets. Therefore, it is imperative to have a keyword-rich headline and introduction with matching skills.

The hiring manager will then read your credentials, impact statements, and achievements.

From there, you move to the round or rounds of interviews that will showcase your fit.

Your resume should pass the initial ATS, and recruiters should be able to find your LinkedIn profile with a well-researched, thought-out profile.

Research Before You Rewrite

One of my favorite coaching exercises is surprisingly simple. Find ten professionals on LinkedIn who already have the job you want. Study their profiles.

Pay attention to:

  • Job titles

  • Keywords

  • Certifications

  • Education

  • Career progression

  • Skills

This isn't about comparison. It's about gathering information.

You'll quickly see common themes, and you'll also identify gaps you may need to address through additional training, certifications, or experience.

Clarity Creates Confidence

Many people struggle with career transitions because they haven't yet decided what chapter they want to write next. That's okay. Career coaching isn't about handing you answers. It's about helping you discover the answers that align with your strengths, values, goals, and vision for your future.

Once you have clarity, your resume becomes easier to write. Your LinkedIn profile becomes easier to optimize. Your interviews become more focused. And your confidence naturally grows.

Still Wondering Why You’re Not Getting Interviews: Ask Yourself This

If a recruiter spent 30 seconds looking at your resume or LinkedIn profile...

Would they know exactly what you want them to hire you for?

If the answer is no, that's where your work begins. Not by adding more experience. But by creating more clarity.
