My Over 50 Career Journey: Introduction

I’ve recently launched a video series on TikTok showcasing my over-50 career journey and why I decided to be a career coach. The Introduction was released earlier this week. My journey led me to coach, help, inspire, and guide others. In addition to the videos, I will also publish written companion pieces that do not require a subscription to read. Subscriptions to some of the other posts are always free, yet it is necessary to prevent others from distributing my intellectual property.

Three Themes in My Career Journey

You will notice three themes within my career journey: It’s never too late to start, you can pivot at any age, and the journey is yours alone to embrace. On average, most adults have two to three careers in their lifetime, with many switching jobs every two to three years for an increase in salary, better benefits, or a balance between work and life.

It's Never Too Late

Yes, it is scary. I will not lie. Change inflicts emotions that some of us are unprepared to deal with. But I can say with full authenticity that it is never too late for a change. As a matter of fact, I have been making these changes my entire life, having to adapt as needed.

Adapting is fine, but what does it bring you? Contentment? Ok, is that what you are striving for? But is it your dream? Are you living your passion? Have you sacrificed your desires to help your partner’s career or raise your children? Did you not have enough money to complete your degree? Jeesh, that sounds like me.

You Can Pivot at Any Age

In this series, you will learn of all the pivots I was forced and chose to make, and I have no regrets. In my twenties, when I first got married, I remember a client of mine advising me about my life plan. My strategy was a popular one in the late 80s and early 90s: major in business, have 2.5 kids (male and female), and a dog in a pretty house. She said, "Have alternate plans.” She wasn’t being malicious, just sage. She was right, four sons later, and I have pivoted so much my head should have screwed itself off. But it didn’t.

Enjoy the Journey

“Enjoy the journey” sounds so cliché. I mean, every self-help guru and meme on social media advises enjoying and embracing the journey. Well, maybe it needs to be stated repeatedly so everyone understands this simple fact: You only have one life. Your journey is yours alone. It might not even take you to the destination you initially thought you wanted, but it will take you where you should be. Everything that was meant to happen to you and for you brought you here.

You will hear me stating I was worried and wasn’t sure, but one thing held true: I enjoyed the ride, every sharp turn, and the winding road. At one point, a stranger emailed me and told me she wrote a paper about me (ME!) for a beauty school project; I was her mentor at a point when I didn’t think my writing and online presence reached anyone. Or at least it wasn’t paying my bills. But I did THAT, and I will detail it heavily when we arrive at that point in my journey during this series.

Why Record My Over 50 Career Journey

Why the hell not? While the series focuses on women over 50, the strategies are the same for anyone at any age. I aim to inspire you to take the leap, live your authentic self, make the big dream a reality, and have zero regrets. Hopefully, my journey will also motivate you to try a coaching session and unlock your potential. Stay tuned for the first installment, the beginning of my career journey. You’ll find it here, or on one of my socials linked below, which follows the Introduction.
