3 Essential Tips for New Coaches Building a Coaching Business
Starting a coaching business requires consistency, professional training, and patience. In this episode of Sip on This, Deirdre shares three essential lessons every new coach needs to hear.
Starting a coaching business takes more than building a website, posting on social media, and waiting for clients. It takes consistent effort, professional development, and patience.
In this episode of Sip on This, I’m sharing three essential tips for new coaches based on what Ihave learned while building Coaching with Ms. D.
1. Be Consistent
Continue showing up even when it feels like nobody is paying attention. Create the website, write the blog, post on social media, take courses, study your niche, practice your coaching skills, and learn everything you can.
Not every action will immediately bring you a new client. But each time you show up, you build your visibility, credibility, confidence, and momentum. People may follow your work quietly for months before they are ready to contact you.
2. Get Certified
Although coaching isn't regulated the same way as therapy, professional coaching certification still matters. Coaches work with people who are navigating important career decisions, relationship concerns, personal goals, and major life transitions.
A respected coaching certification program teaches you how to listen, ask meaningful questions, establish professional boundaries, follow ethical standards, and help clients discover their own answers.
Certification can also create additional professional opportunities. Coaching platforms, established coaching organizations, and companies hiring coaches for their employees may require recognized training or credentials.
Certification alone will not make someone a great coach. Experience, continued education, practice, empathy, and human connection still matter. But certification provides an ethical and professional foundation for your coaching practice.
3. Be Patient
Building a successful coaching business takes time. Online, you may see coaches announcing full calendars, major launches, and six-figure businesses. What you usually don't see is the years of work behind those accomplishments.
Do not compare the beginning of your journey to another coach’s middle.
Keep learning, building relationships, talking about your work, and letting people know and trust you. A potential client may read your blog, watch your videos, listen to your podcast, visit your website, or attend a discovery call long before deciding to work with you.
That doesn't mean your work isn't reaching people. They may simply not be ready yet.
As your coaching business grows, you grow too. You are developing your voice, strengthening your skills, identifying the clients you serve best, and learning how you want to run your business.
If you are a new coach, remember: remain consistent, pursue professional certification, and be patient with yourself and the process. The clients will come, your confidence will grow, and the work you are doing now will create the foundation for what comes next.
